Items Not Allowed in Buildings
Plant Services and Custodial staff have conducted walk-through of all of our schools and identified several potential hazards that we need to call to you attention.
Accordingly, the following items cannot be used unless they are approved by Plant Services on a case-by-case basis.
- In-classroom/office microwaves
- In-classroom/office refrigerators
- Plug in air fresheners
- In-classroom/office coffee pots
- Toaster or toaster ovens anywhere except in the cafeteria kitchen
- Potpourri kettles
- Hot plates or coffee cup warmers
- Space heaters or electric foot warmers
- Appliances without UL listings or that are rated for household use
In addition to improving classroom safety, these restrictions will reduce energy consumption and consequently reduce the school division's utility costs.
To comply with the fire code we must also prohibit the following:
- Combustible materials on or over doors, i.e. paper decorations
- Cloth or curtains covering doors or windows to classrooms
- Window curtains or valances that have not been manufactured of fire retardant material or treated with fire retardant by the manufacturer
- Candles or other open flames except in science labs
- Artwork being displayed such that it covers the entire wall, floor to ceiling. According to the law, no more than 20% of a wall's surface can be covered
- Large accumulation of paper that is stacked or stored haphazardly
- Classroom furniture laid out in a manner that inhibits rapid egress from the space
- Classroom furniture and supplies located in the hallways that inhibits rapid egress from the building
- The use of extension cords for permanent wiring
In accordance with our strategic plan, we want to maintain school climates and facilities that are safe, orderly, nurturing and supportive of quality teaching and learning. Your assistance in assuring that our facilities comply with the requirements outlined above will improve everyone's safety.
