Shops and Supervisors

Carpenter and Roof Shop

Plant Services' is very proud of its Carpenter and Roof shop which is responsible for maintaining the interior and exteriors of the buildings; as well as the roof maintenance of each building. This shop consists of fifteen skilled craftsmen: one carpentry supervisor, 1 carpenter crew leader four carpenter II's, two carpenter I's, two locksmiths, a mason/tile mechanic, one roofer crew leader, and three roofer II's. Areas covered by the Carpenter and Roof shop consists of; floors, ceilings, walls, doors, windows, signage, roofs, and miscellaneous maintenance. The shop is also responsible for the supervision and maintenance of new construction, as well as the abatement of hazardous material when necessary. Electrical Shop

The Electrical shop has ten Electricians including; one Electrician Supervisor, one Electrician Crew Leader, eight Electrician II's, three of whom have their Electrical Master's license, and five have their Electrical Journeyman's license. The electric shop maintains all electrical systems in the schools including the theatrical lighting; the shop also maintains building generators on a maintenance contract. HVAC

The HVAC Shop has fourteen employees, including one Supervisor, one Crew Leader, one Boiler Technician, one HVAC III, six HVAC II's, and four HVAC I's. Six employees in the shop have their Master HVAC license, one employee has his Gas Master's license, and three have their Journeyman's HVAC license. The shop is responsible for all heating, cooling and ventilation equipment in every school division building. The shop is also responsible for all controls either pneumatic or Direct Digital Controls, (by computer). The shop also includes a night crew of four that cleans and replaces filters for all units. Landscaping Shop

Implemented into the Plant Services Department in 2002 the Landscape Shop is responsible for weekly mowing and trimming of 320 acres of the 900 acres that surround Newport News Public Schools. We provide shrub pruning, weed control and mulching for high visibility areas around the schools. We also perform tree removal and trimming during winter months and after storm or hurricane events. Our shop has a full time staff of eleven employees. The shop consists of one supervisor, one crew leader, three leads, three landscapers, three grounds equipment managers, four maintain a Pesticide Registered Technician Applicator’s Certificate, and one a Licensed Applicator’s Certificate. Paint Shop

The Paint Shop is responsible for the maintaining the school system's appearance by paying regular attention to the paint on both the interior and exterior of each school. This shop includes six employees with one Painter Supervisor; one Painter III, two Painter II's, and two Painter I's. All the painters are dedicated to maintaining aesthetically pleasing buildings. Plumbing Shop

The Plumbing Shop's six members including; one plumber I, two plumber II's, one plumbing crew leader, a welder/fitter and a plumbing shop supervisor are responsible for cleaning, repairing, unstopping and servicing all sanitary and storm drainage systems. A great deal of time for the plumbing shop is spent repairing or replacing faucets, water coolers, water heaters, sewer lift stations and maintaining grease traps. The shop also pays attention to the domestic water systems for potential backflow problems and maintains devices which keep the water supply safe. The welder repairs, fabricates, installs, and replaces any metal related items from boilers to class room chairs. Although the shop remains busy it still finds the time to assist other shops as well as work on school renovations. Supply Shop

The Supply Shop is responsible for ordering, receiving, storing and issuing parts and materials to all Plant Services Shops and Custodial Services. The Supply Shop consists of one supply supervisor, one assistant supervisor, and one storekeeper II. Supply maintains an inventory of over 2,300 line items with a value of approximately $500,000 at any given time. The shop’s three members are also responsible for ordering specialty repair parts and materials for Renovation Projects. Other duties the shop is responsible for include; overseeing fire extinguisher and sprinkler system services and inspections, overseeing elevator service and inspections, overhead door repairs and installations, and ordering replacement signs as well as overseeing fence installation and repair services.
