Construction Progress Update

The Huntington Middle School building site is divided into four (4) building zones, A, B, C, and D. MEB General Contractors, Inc, the Contractor, is developing the building pad in the order of zones C, D, B, and A. The work completed in these building zones are as follows:
Zone “C”
- Roofing on remainder of area C low roof(s), i.e., entry way, staff dining, locker rooms, main corridor are approximately 95% complete.
- Continue overhead mechanical, electrical, and plumbing rough-ins are approximately 90% complete
- Installation of overhead sprinkler piping is approximately 90% complete.
- Roofing over metal stud framing for gym exterior parapets and overhang is approximately 90% complete.
- Installation of roof deck over main corridor is complete.
- Block filler on CMU walls in locker rooms is complete.
- Pipe and duct insulation in gym and locker rooms is complete.
- Curtain wall installation is ongoing around the gym and approximately 60% complete.
- Z girts and insulation for metal panels around the gym is approximately 70% complete.
- RTUs and MAUs on area C roofs have been set.
Zone “D”
- Continue installation of overhead mechanical, electrical, & plumbing rough-ins are approximately 85% complete.
- RTUs and MAUs on area D roof have been set.
- Brick veneer is approximately 90% complete on plan W wall (28th street).
- Brick veneer is approximately 80% complete on plan E wall (courtyard).
- Installation of white cap (final layer) of roofing on high roof ongoing and is approximately 60% complete.
- In wall MEP rough-ins are approximately 80% complete over all three floors.
- Grease interceptor and piping is installed.
- Kitchen hoods have been roughed in.
- Block filler and prime coat on CMU walls is approximately 80% complete..
Zone “B”
- Brick veneer on plan W (28th street) wall is approximately 90% complete.
- Brick veneer on plan E (courtyard) wall is approximately 95% complete.
- Interior metal stud framing in admin area is complete.
- Brick veneer on plan N wall (admin area exterior) is in progress.
- Installation of 1st floor ductwork is 70% complete.
- Interior CMU walls “non-load bearing” are approximately 95% complete.
- Mechanical Units have been set on high roof of area B.
- Top layer (white cap) of roofing ongoing on high roof area B.
- Roof decking is substantially complete in the low roof areas of area B.
- Wall and overhead MEP rough-ins in the admin area is approximately 25% complete.
- Wall and overhead MEP rough-ins in the classroom wing (1st, 2nd, 3rd floors) are approximately 60% complete.
Zone “A”
- Structural steel framing of the entrance vestibule and main corridor is substantially complete.
- Air barrier on exterior of forum and main vestibule has begun.
- Setting roof joist over area “A” are approximately 90% complete.
- Roof deck installation is ongoing and is approximately 60% complete.
Field House
- Complete installation of interior CMU block walls.
- In wall plumbing and electrical rough-ins are complete.
Utilities
- Storm water installations are complete across and down 30th Street. On-site storm water piping is approximately 70% complete.
- On site sewer line from building to existing manhole off site along 28th street is complete.
- Water: MEB has received drawings from Newport News Waterworks and is currently working on installation. All NN Waterworks fees have been paid. check and FDC and are pending the waterworks design prior to continuation.
- Electrical: Dominion Energy transformer is in Richmond, VA. Dominion Energy has declared the transformer emergency equipment and will not release the transformer until April 2026. The transformer pad has been placed, the site has been prepped to receive the transformer, the meter base has been set, and the primary lines have been pulled.
- Gas: Meter locations have been provided for the owner and confirmed by the design team. The City of Newport News has submitted a work order and application to Virginia Natural Gas. VNG has confirmed the meter location and is scheduling a contractor for the gas line install across Wickham to the meter location (installation TBD). The 12 inch Gas Main on Wickham Street is at the same elevation as the 8 inch sanitary sewer existing HMS. The city is required to contact VNG to relocate, i.e., drop elevation of the gas main.
Overall Completion
- Overall Completion is 55% complete.
