Huntington Middle School: The Next Chapter

The proud history of Huntington High School and Huntington Middle School will continue with the construction of a new 600-student middle school, anticipated to open during the 2026-2027 school year.

The new middle school is part of the city’s Southeast Community Resource Area that is set to include a public library and community center, as well as sports and recreation features.

Construction Progress Update

August 18, 2026

The Huntington Middle School building site is divided into four (4) building zones, A, B, C, and D. MEB General Contractors, Inc, the Contractor, is developing the building pad in the order of zones C, D, B, and A. The work completed in these building zones are as follows:

Zone “C”

• Installing exterior metal composite panels around the gym exterior is approximately 90% complete.
• Block-filler applied to 75% of interior walls.
• Glass curtain wall framing installation around gym is approximately 95% complete. Glass has been installed.
• RTUs and MAUs on area C roof have been set, and Mechanical, electrical, and plumbing rough-ins are near completion.
• Storm water chase walls have been completed.
• Contractor framing parapet walls and installing sheathing.
• Contractor roofing parapet walls and making roof terminations at building edge.

Zone “D”

• Contractor to continue installation of overhead mechanical, electrical, and plumbing rough-ins are substantially complete.
• RTUs and MAUs on area C roof have been set, and Mechanical, electrical, and plumbing rough-ins are near completion.
• Windows have been installed on the exterior educational wing of area D.
• Sprinkler systems have been installed and are waiting on ceiling installations on all three floors.
• HVAC ductwork is approximately 90% complete on all floors.
• Kitchen hoods have been set in-place, rough-ins are complete and the unit is waiting on permanent power for equipment start-up.
• Electrical subcontractor-is-prepping to install electrical panels and pulling wire.
• HVAC equipment in mechanical closets on main corridors is being installed on all three floors of the educational wing.
• Loading dock has been cast in-place with concrete, and substantially complete.
• Generator has been installed on concrete pad.
• HVAC ductwork installation is on-going in the cafeteria.

Zone “B”

• Brick veneer on exterior walls is substantially complete.
• Interior CMU walls “non-load bearing” are complete.
• RTUs and MAUs on area C roof have been set, and Mechanical, electrical, and plumbing rough-ins are near completion.
• Sprinkler systems have been installed and are waiting on ceiling installations on all three floors.
• HVAC ductwork is approximately 90% complete on all floors.
• Roofing on the low areas of area B is approximately 85% complete.
• Electrical subcontractor-is-prepping to install electrical panels and pulling wire.
• Structural Steel is approximately 90% complete in the media center area.
• Metal decking installation has begun over the media center.
• Block filler has been applied to interior CMU walls.
• Begin installation of Hollow Metal Doors throughout area B.
• Interior soffit being formed over learning commons off main corridor.
• Slab diamonds will be poured around corridor columns.
• Stairwell installation on-going in area B.
• Contractor to continue installation of overhead mechanical, electrical, and plumbing rough-ins are substantially complete.
• Windows have been installed on the exterior educational wing of area B.
• Sprinkler hydronic pipe welding is completed on third floor of the educational wing.
• Storefront installations are in progress along 28th street.
• Contractor pulling feeder wires to electrical panels.
• Contractor working to make roofing terminations to plan North & South of the educational wing of the building edge.

Zone “A”

• Structural steel and cold form framing is on-going in area A.
• Roof Decking is approximately 80% complete.
• Structural steel beams and joist are being installed over CTE classrooms.
• Metal Stud Walls and Hollow Metal Frames are approximately 95% complete.
• Begin installation of Hollow Metal Doors throughout area A.
• Contractor is installing overhead hydronic piping for sprinkler system.
• MEP rough-ins on-going overhead.
• Ductwork installation is approximately 80 complete in area A.
• Roofing is approximately 50% complete in area A.
• Contractor is installing spandrel steel and deck edge at forum.

Field House

• Structural steel is nearly complete.
• Mason to start brick work on building exterior.

Site Work

• Site utilities are complete in the Courtyard.
• Contractor has re-proof rolled parking lot and is making corrections.
• Contractor has placed artificial turf on football field and is substantially complete.
• Contractor is running conduits underground to field house.
• Contractor to run conduits to site poles and athletic poles.
• Contractor is currently proof rolling the athletic track around the football field.

Utilities

• On-site storm water piping is approximately 85% complete.
• Water: MEB has received approved drawings from Newport News Waterworks and is currently working on installation.
• Water piping is being connected to existing water main along Orcutt with tapping sleeve and valve.
• Sanitary Sewer piping being installed along Orcutt.
• Electrical: Transformer has been installed on-site and contractor is in the process of securing cable to power the transformer.
• Gas: The City of Newport News has submitted a work order and application to Virginia Natural Gas. VNG has confirmed the meter locations and is scheduling a contractor for the gas line install across Wickham to the meter location (installation TBD).

Overall Completion

• Overall Completion is 63% complete.
