Security Awareness
Be careful on the web!
Computers become infected from visiting infected websites or downloading free software from untrusted websites. These risky behaviors include:
- Clicking on or in pop-up windows
- Visiting unknown or untrusted sites
- Downloading software from untrusted resources
- Clicking on links from email or instant messaging (IM)
Keep your mobile device up to date.
-
Do not change your device's security settings - jailbreaking or rooting your phone removes the built-in security features.
-
Only install apps from trusted sources such as the Apple AppStore or Google Play.
-
Understand app permissions before accepting them - be cautious about granting apps access to personal information.
-
Update and patch your smartphone's software as recommended by the manufacture or IT department.
-
Be smart on open Wi-Fi networks - your phone can be an easy target to cyber-criminals on a public Wi-Fi network.
Practice good password management.
Use a password manager can help you to maintain strong unique passwords for all of your accounts. These programs can generate strong passwords for you, enter credentials automatically, and remind you to update your passwords periodically.
Use the following password tips:
-
Use long passwords - 8 characters or more is recommended. Use a strong mix of characters or a pass phrase.
-
Use a unique password. Do not use the same password for multiple sites.
-
Do not share your passwords.
-
Don't write them down (especially not on a post-it note attached to your monitor).
-
Update your passwords periodically (every 90 days or 3 months).
