COVID-19 Impact on SOL Assessments, Verified Credits, and Graduation Requirements for Spring/Summer 2020

(en español)

With the closing of schools due to COVID-19, many students and families have questions about how the canceling of SOL testing in the Spring/Summer 2020 impacted their student. Please see the information below to see how your student was impacted.

You may confer with your Professional School Counselor if you have any questions concerning verified credits and graduation requirements.

Elementary School (K-5)

  • Students in K - 2 do not take Standards of Learning (SOL) tests.

  • Students in grades 3 - 5 did NOT participate in any SOL tests and will not be required to makeup the missed SOL tests.

  • Students in grades 3-11 with Significant Cognitive Disabilities who qualified in the 2019-2020 academic year to participate in the Virginia Alternate Assessment Program (VAAP), did NOT be submit a Collection of Evidence for the academic year.

Middle School (6-8)

  • Students in grades 6 - 8 did NOT participate in any grade level Standards of Learning (SOL) tests and will not be required to makeup the missed SOL tests.

    Underclassmen Enrolled in EOC Courses

If the student was ENROLLED in the course, earning a standard credit during the Spring 2020 and/or Summer 2020 semester(s) (Passes BOTH semesters of the course) AND needed the verified credit for that course to meet a graduation requirement, then:

A locally-awarded verified credit (LAVC) was awarded if the student showed mastery of standards, competencies, and objectives in that course by earning a passing grade and the standard credit for the course in Spring 2020 and/or Summer 2020 (has a passing grade in BOTH Semester 1 and Semester 2 of the Course). This LAVC will NOT count against the cap the student has on allowable Locally Awarded Verified Credits.

Possible EOC Courses in which Students can earn Verified Credits:

    - English: 11 English
    - History/Social Science: World Geography (or AP Human Geography), World History, or Va & US History
    - Mathematics: Algebra I, Geometry, or Algebra II
    - Science: Earth Science (or AP Environmental Science), Biology, or Chemistry

Students must show mastery of course standards by passing both semesters of the course to be eligible for a locally-awarded verified credit (LAVC).

    Underclassmen "Retester" for EOC Courses

If the student was previously ENROLLED in the course, earned a standard credit for that course prior to the Spring 2020 semester AND still needed the verified credit for that course to meet a graduation requirement, then one of the following can apply:

    - The student will be permitted to take the EOC SOL test during the next testing administration. Please touch base with the student's counselor to verify the need to still test and possible tutoring opportunities that will be available prior to testing.

    - If the student was scheduled to test during the Spring 2020 test administration and before the close of the Spring 2020 NonWriting administration was provided with targeted and sustained remediation or enrolled in a course in spring 2020 intended to prepare them for taking the previously failed SOL end-of-course test (score between 1-399) then the student may earn ONE Locally Verified Credit as a "retester." (This does not apply to students who have a score of 0 due to parent refusal, cheating or student disruption. The student must have a valid failing test attempt on file.) If the student meets the criteria for more than one retest, the student and parent will need to decide which test they would like to apply this option to and follow up with their Professional School Counselor.
