NNPS Plan for Safe Return to In-Person Instruction Postponed

Oct. 13: Message from the Superintendent, Return to Learn Postponement

On October 13, with the support of the School Board and school division leadership, the Superintendent postponed the timeline for the return to in-person instruction. Previously, on October 6, the Newport News School Board approved a phase-in plan for returning students back to in-person instruction and gave the Superintendent the authority to revise the timeline as needed to ensure a safe and effective transition for students and staff. The presentation below was presented during the October 6 School Board meeting.

Over the last several weeks, NNPS leaders have been working in consultation with the Peninsula Health District to monitor COVID-19 transmission and trends in our community and in neighboring localities. Based on recent positive health metrics, the School Board voted to begin in-person instruction in mid-October. The approved plan will bring students back to school in smaller groups following the hybrid learning model, which combines in-person and virtual instruction. A virtual option remains available for all families.
